A collection of authentic characters from an ongoing sequence by artist Masanori Ushiki. Based mostly in Kyoto, Ushiki attracts inspiration from Japanese anime, tokusatsu, toys, and graphic tradition of the Eighties and Nineties. In “Fighters”, Ushiki’s characters are distinguished by distinctive color palettes and complicated textile-inspired patterns. His work has been exhibited internationally, together with in Paris and Hong Kong.
“I’ve all the time been fascinated by character design. I need every character to really feel full by its visible design alone. Trend is a vital factor of my work, and the repeated patterns impressed by textiles create a way of rhythm throughout the image airplane. By permitting motifs to recur, I hope the viewer’s eye naturally strikes by the composition, giving every picture a quiet sense of motion. Whereas my visible language is rooted within the tradition I grew up with, I’m not keen on nostalgia. I wish to create authentic characters that really feel as if they’ve arrived from the long run.”
