I am unsure how or why this occurred, however the nation of France has developed its personal tackle oi, the chant-along street-punk fashion that when appeared definitively British. French bands like Syndrome 81, Prisonnier Du Temps, Oi Boys, and Rancoeur have developed an echo-drenched tackle oi that mixes the unique music with goth and post-punk, making a dank, mysterious, and extremely cool sound. Its affect is spreading, as bands like Quebec’s Béton Armé and Edmonton’s House Entrance appear to be drawing from a number of the identical identical wells.
Final 12 months, The Guardian ran a development piece in regards to the French oi phenomenon that referred to those bands as “chilly oi” and traced its origins to the pioneering French punk band Métal Urbain’s resolution to make use of a drum machine as a substitute of a human drummer within the ’70s. Certain! Is sensible to me! However at the very least a number of the credit score in all probability belongs to underground legends Rixe, who final surfaces with the 2024 EP Tir Groupé. At the very least one member of Rixe can also be in Squelette, a Paris band with a ver cool new EP that matches proper into that fashion.
Squelette (French for Skeleton) have been round for a decade, and we final heard from them when the launched the very cool 2023 album Fin de Partie. Immediately, they’re again with the brand new EP Soir d’Orage (French for Stormy Night), a brand new EP of punchy however atmospheric struggle music with occasional bursts of recent wave melody. The ultimate observe is a haunted instrumental that is not even remotely oi, an enchanting twist. If you are going to begin a drunken brawl in any catacombs anytime quickly, this report must be your soundtrack. Pay attention under.
