A collection of work from painter Benjamin Styer. Styer was born in Boston and is at present based mostly between Massachusetts and California. His work explores magical realism, people artwork, and visionary portray by a contemporary lens. Drawing from artwork historic contexts reminiscent of Renaissance manuscripts, German Fraktur, and illustrated music scores, Styer replaces their spiritual mysticism with a whimsical sensibility, arranging compositions from doodles, segments of calligraphic textile design, collage, and scrap poetry. Styer’s observe celebrates desktop litter as private treasures—plastic souvenirs, cartoon collectible figurines, rubber stamps, and different junk-drawer materials—objects with hidden connections, harking back to kids’s guide illustration.
