A collection documenting the modifications which have taken place within the metropolis of Chongqing by photographer Ximeng Tu. Tu grew up close to the Jialing River and sometimes swam there as a baby. After finding out in different cities in his youth, Tu returned to Chongqing for college. The Chongqing of immediately is completely different from the Chongqing of Tu’s childhood and these pictures are an effort to file these modifications—to inform the story of the riverside from his perspective and reminiscence. Whereas initially noting the distinct shift in city structure, Tu started to note different issues like elevated congestion, environmental air pollution, and poverty:

“That is precisely what Jane Jacobs put ahead: ‘Town is an organism.’ So my eyes turned from the high-rise buildings within the metropolis to people, and I discovered in regards to the metropolis by attending to know people. This images assortment is a journey of self-discovery, a option to retrace my very own development by means of the act of capturing pictures. I started visiting each nook of Chongqing—its mountains, rivers, timber, and the pebbles alongside its riverbanks—making an attempt to decipher the connections between individuals, the town, the flowing waters, and my very own bond with my hometown. By means of images, I attempt to freeze Chongqing in time, but the method itself carries a paradoxical feeling—the nearer I get, the extra I search, the deeper the sense of loss turns into.”

Ximeng Tu participated in our 2025 Booooooom Artwork & Picture Guide Award and made our shortlist.
