In her collection Floaters, Rebus processes these crowdsourced models by freezing them with watercolor pigments, which she then permits to soften throughout the substrate, creating summary colour fields. She then provides figures and parts of panorama, usually with a fluid, rippling impact evocative of sunshine glinting off the floor of a lake, as aquatic themes emerge within the type of swimming pools and swimmers.
“Almost each pattern arrives with a letter, opening a dialogue formed by place, temper, reminiscence, and time,” Rebus says. “Through the years, I’ve constructed an archive of waters from rain, rivers, seas, oceans, and glaciers, every preserved as each materials report and human message.”
