A novel bronze seal ring engraved with an outline of the famed Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of many Seven Wonders of the Historical World, has been found within the metropolis’s harbour. It’s the first depiction of the Lighthouse ever discovered on a seal ring.
Underwater archaeologists discovered the ring in an exploration of the submerged royal island of Antirhodos which was a part of historical Alexandria’s Japanese Harbour. The invention location is critical as a result of Antirhodos was the positioning of a Ptolemaic royal palace documented by geographer Strabo when he visited Alexandria between 29 and 25 B.C.
Different objects recovered close to the ring embrace pottery, glass, tableware, amphorae, bottles, lamps and different utilitarian objects relationship from the 4th century B.C. to the 4th century A.D.
The Lighthouse of Alexandria was constructed on the island of Pharos on the entrance to the Portus Magnus, the good harbor, throughout the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus within the third century B.C. It consisted of three ranges: a sq. base, an octagonal physique and a round tower topped with the good hearth. The flames have been fueled by wooden and resin, and amplified by steel mirrors. It could possibly be seen from not less than two dozen miles away and guided ships navigating the coast safely into the harbour.
It was a logo of Alexandria and its industrial success, and an acknowledged architectural masterpiece. Depictions of it appeared on cash within the Ptolemaic period and below Roman imperial rule. The picture engraved on the ring is much like the depictions of the Lighthouse on 2nd century cash, so archaeologists have tentatively dated the ring to that interval.
