Mike Patton introduced Mondo Cane — his mission masking Italian pop songs from the ’50s and ’60s — to Mexico for the primary time Thursday (Oct. 1).
For the encore at Mexico Metropolis’s Palacio de Bellas Artes, Patton shifted to Mexican music, singing in Spanish on “La Llorona,” the normal Mexican tune related to Chavela Vargas; “Luz de Luna,” Álvaro Carrillo’s tune popularized by Javier Solís; and Juan Gabriel’s “Hasta Que Te Conocí.” Throughout “Retrovertigo,” a Mr. Bungle tune, Mariachi Gama 1000 joined Patton onstage halfway by means of, then remained for “Luz de Luna” and “Hasta Que Te Conocí.” The Juan Gabriel cowl was significantly notable as a result of the late Mexican pop icon gave a sequence of well-known concert events at Bellas Artes in 1990, whereas Mariachi Gama 1000 had a longstanding affiliation with him.
