Francisco de Zurbaran Agnus Dei

The primary main monographic exhibition within the UK dedicated to Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664), is on view on the Nationwide Gallery from 2 Might to 23 August 2026.

Together with Diego Velázquez (1599–1660) and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682), Zurbarán was one of many main painters of Seventeenth-century Spain. His work, which embrace beautiful life-size depictions of saints, hovering altarpieces and contemplative nonetheless lifes, are celebrated for his or her naturalism, directness and deep emotional energy.

This exhibition is the primary devoted presentation of the artist’s work on the Nationwide Gallery since 1994 when the sequence of ‘Jacob and his Twelve Sons’ from Auckland Fort was proven within the Sunley Room. A number of works by Zurbarán additionally featured in The Sacred Made Actual, an exhibition held in 2009–10.

This exhibition of virtually 50 work will span the chronological and iconographic breadth of the artist’s profession. It is going to unite distinctive works from the gathering of the Nationwide Gallery (together with Saint Margaret of Antioch, A Cup of Water and a Rose and Juan de Zurbarán’s Nonetheless Life with Lemons in a Wicker Basket) with work from the Musée du Louvre (‘Saint Bonaventure on His Bier’ and ‘Saint Apollonia’) and the Artwork Institute of Chicago (‘The Crucifixion’, ‘Saint Romanus of Antioch’ and ‘Saint Barulas’ and Juan de Zurbarán’s ‘Flowers and Fruit in a Chinese language Bowl’), the 2 accomplice museums to which the exhibition will journey between October 2026 and June 2027.

Different main loans from France (‘Saint Francis of Assisi’, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon), Spain (‘Agnus Dei’, Museo Nacional del Prado; ‘Immaculate Conception’, Museu Nacional d’Artwork de Catalunya) and the USA (‘Christ and the Virgin within the Home at Nazareth’, Cleveland Museum of Artwork) will full this complete exploration of Zurbarán’s profession, which seeks to evoke the thriller, imaginative and prescient and energy of his artwork.
