Brooklyn-based artist Sung Hwa Kim was born in Seoul and holds a BFA from the Artwork Institute of Boston (2008) and an MFA from the Maryland Institute Faculty of Artwork (2012).
His work explores the passage of time via the standard Korean white porcelain jar, utilizing it as a logo of cyclical transitions and existential contemplation. Kim invitations viewers to mirror on the fragile stability between what fades and what endures, likening his strategy to writing a haiku—capturing fleeting, poetic moments which can be each private and common. His evocative use of colour marks shifts between city and pastoral, day and evening, and life and loss of life, creating landscapes the place nature’s tranquility meets the vitality of the town. Every portray presents a dreamlike snapshot, suspended between opposing forces and welcoming viewers to cross the edge between the ephemeral and the enduring. By his artwork, Kim gives a meditative journey into the intersections of time, place, and emotion, revealing the delicate connections between the tangible world and the transcendent.
