This week I discuss with Judith Weisenfeld, creator of Black Faith within the Madhouse: Race & Psychiatry in Slavery’s Wake. We focus on in regards to the origins of the ebook, how the antebellum interval formed perceptions of African American faith, and the position of ‘non secular pleasure’ in madness diagnoses. We additionally chat in regards to the connections between race and faith, the pathologizing of faith by skilled psychiatrists, and the legacy of this period.
