Nigerien singer, songwriter and guitarist Mdou Moctar is understood for his electrifying Tuareg rock performances, however his newest album sees the band unplug.
Tears of Injustice, a re-imagining of 2024’s Funeral for Justice, sees the band stripping away the amplification and distortion of their signature sound. These new acoustic re-recordings are highly effective, addressing the battle he is seen in his native Niger — from shedding Indigenous languages to the false freedom he sees for his countrymen.
On this session, Moctar and his band carry out songs from Tears of Injustice reside within the studio. Plus, Moctar and bassist/producer Mikey Coltun speak about why they wished to make an acoustic album and the way being stranded within the U.S. throughout a army coup in Niger performed an element in making it occur.
