Shadow Discuss by Dylan Rose Rheingold marks the artist’s second solo exhibition at T293 and options her largest physique of labor to this point: three monumental mural-sized work that push the boundaries of scale and intimacy. Alongside these, a collection of automated drawings on paper, which Rheingold regards as research within the ongoing evolution of her follow.
Rooted in a mix of home interiors and dreamlike landscapes, this new collection explores the interaction of area, reminiscence, and nostalgia. The artist merges the realms of surrealism and abstraction, permitting her to weave collectively the mundanity and the fleeting nature of reminiscence in a fashion that’s each intimately eerie and unusually acquainted. Themes and imagery central to her follow embody symbols of otherness, femininity, and her heterogeneous cultural background. By using unconventional compositions – by using automated drawing and surrealist automatism, in addition to her distinctive layering of combined media – she transforms these components into nostalgic, half-remembered goals. Rheingold’s work is drawn to the thought of on a regular basis feelings and banal areas that, when seen by her surrealist model, are amplified and remodeled into unconscious worlds which are each unknowable and universally acquainted. By exaggerating the susceptible and unglamorous particulars – and infrequently veiled truths – of the female expertise, the artist highlights a important second in a younger girl’s life: the conclusion of the inherent accountability she should take in to hold the gaze of others.
The idea behind “Shadow Discuss” emerged from a consideration of efficiency: spotlights, gentle sources, and moments of bodily publicity that always outline a coming-of-age platform. On this context, the shadow symbolizes outdated variations of ourselves and others who not actively inhabit our lives. Very like the objects that maintain familial significance – these with a presence in an area regardless of their bodily absence – the shadow embodies a way of “otherness” by aura or power. From a proper perspective, these components are sometimes painted over, with fleeting traces subtly peeking by the brushwork, as if whispering an overhead secret that requires time and engagement to really uncover, like urgent your ear in opposition to a door to pay attention for fragments of a hidden fact.
