Talking with Guitar, Toto guitarist Steve Lukather – who can also be a legendary session participant – seemed again on recording the solo for Toto’s hit debut single, “Maintain The Line”, for the band’s self-titled first album, launched in September 1978:

Lukather: “It was the primary solo I reduce on the album, and I used to be on the spot. I used to be 19 years previous, and I used to be scared shitless. I used to be within the studio with my guitar cranked to 10, and all of those guys have been behind the glass taking a look at me like, ‘You higher convey it, child.’ They counted off 4 bars, and off I went. I had no thought what I used to be doing. I assumed to myself, ‘If I fuck this up, I’m over.’”

Q: That highly effective rhythm guitar crunch – the place did that come from?

Lukather: “That’s what I delivered to the band. Fact is, it was the obvious half to play. I imply, it wasn’t like, ‘Wow, that’s genius.’ I used to be simply following the bass and piano half. Now, in doing that, it toughened issues up. It wasn’t going to be just a bit pop tune. Jeff dug in along with his drums a little bit more durable than he would have on another session. We have been simply discovering who the hell we have been.”

Q: Was it at all times identified that you’d play a solo within the tune?

Lukather: “The solo was inbuilt. Paich was like, ‘Oh, you’re going to solo over this part’. I stated, ‘Oh, wow.’ I used to be within the sizzling seat. It was one take till the very finish after I did the concord guitars. Dave insisted on that – ‘I need that Queen-Boston factor.’ For that, he punched me in and I performed the primary concord, after which I doubled it. We did it as a three-part factor.”

Q: Let’s drill down a bit. So that you knew there could be a solo, however you didn’t plan it out in any respect, even a little bit bit?

Lukather: “No! It was like, ‘Go. Play. Now.’ It was improvised. The solo was one take out of worry.”
