This week, I discuss with Angela Tozer, creator of The Debt of a Nation: Land and the Financing of the Canadian Settler State, 1820-73. We focus on how governments tackle debt, the aim of debt, and the way colonialism fuelled land hypothesis. We additionally chat about how useful resource extraction was vital to servicing debt, the modifications introduced on by Confederation, and the on-going legacy of nineteenth century nationwide debt.
