London post-punk and ethereal-grunge quartet Dogviolet captures quiet endurance on debut EP Wilting, a four-track venture constructed on evocative vocals and layered, various instrumentals. Impressed by the pure world, vivid botanical imagery turns into the language by which the EP unfolds narratives of inherited trauma, social injustice and familial expectation.
Meditating on survival and flourishing, the EP sees intimate vulnerability collide with visceral reflections as post-punk grit spreads by gothic shoegaze and folky melodies to create a distorted but dreamy musical expertise hinged on contradictions and contrasts.
From exploring pressures positioned upon the eldest daughter inside a household on floating manufacturing “Daughter,” and the darkish, grungy stylings of “Fig Leaves,” with its narratives of misogyny and feminist awakening to the theatrical, psychedelic aptitude of “Black Walnut,” and the bittersweet nostalgia of “Daisy Crowns,” which dives into carefree youth and the load of maturity, the EP is poetic but grounding as sways seamlessly between haunting restraint and highly effective confrontation.
Uncooked and wealthy, intimate and societal, private and political, every factor of the manufacturing suits collectively to craft a resonant exploration of the fashionable world we stay in.
Talking of the EP, lead vocalist and lyricist Naz Toorabally says “Wilting felt like a becoming metaphor for a set of songs about not dropping hope within the face of adversity.
