Of the various, many, MANY Roman phallus finds I’ve written about over time, this can be a first: a Roman nail cleaner on one finish and a phallus on the opposite. It was found close to Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, throughout a preventative archaeology excavation forward of enhancements to the M5 freeway junction.
The fingernail cleaner has a flat blade, rectangular in cross-section, with a groove working down the middle of its full size that opens to a double-pronged terminal. The forked finish was used to wash beneath fingernails. The highest of the blade is mounted to the bottom of the phallus, welcomed by a pair of spherical testicles. The shaft the phallus tapers in barely from the broader base, then widens once more on the glans. A dangling loop is mounted on the highest aspect of the phallus about halfway down the shaft.
Such a cleaner dates to round 300-400 A.D. and examples of them have been present in Gloucestershire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire. A second notable late Roman artifact was unearthed close to the phallic manicure instrument: a copper alloy belt buckle. An extended rectangular plate of sheet steel was bent across the flat a part of a D-shaped buckle and riveted collectively on the ends with two rivets. The plate is adorned with a border of overlapping dots to create what appears like a straight line. Open circles with dots within the middle are stamped all alongside the border strains.
