A distinctive Roman brooch embellished with enamel in a zig-zag sample has been acquired by the Nationwide Museums Scotland and will probably be occurring show for the primary time in a brand new exhibition. Created round 100-160 A.D., the brooch is product of bronze with the swish curves of Celtic metalwork and is embellished on the floor with alternating squares of crimson and yellow enamel within the vibrant colours and miniaturized precision of Roman approach. It’s 6cm (2.4 inches) lengthy. Scientific evaluation of the floor discovered that it was initially coated with a skinny layer of tin. This might have made the enamel shimmer and complimented the brilliant colours.
It was found in 2022 by a metallic detectorist in discipline close to Pathhead, Midlothian. Archaeologists consider it was made in northern England by expert craftsmen who used the Roman brooches introduced in with the invading legions as the bottom for a brand new hybrid that built-in native and imported types.
Dr Fraser Hunter, principal curator of prehistory and Roman archaeology at Nationwide Museums Scotland, stated: “The Pathhead brooch is a miniature masterpiece of craftworking and the small print are beautiful.

The exhibition, Roman Scotland: Life on the Fringe of Empire runs from November 14, 2026, via April 28, 2027. The extraordinary altar to Mithras with the cut-out photo voltaic rays can even go on show within the new exhibition.
