Photographer Brian Van Lau’s debut monograph, We’re Simply Right here for the Unhealthy Guys, chronicles Lau’s relationship together with his estranged father who was absent throughout Lau’s childhood on account of his incarceration. After his launch, Lau’s father rebuilt his life in Vietnam and disappeared from Lau’s life for almost a decade. Lau traveled to Vietnam following information of a sudden sickness and discovered his father had terminal most cancers. Throughout their last week collectively, Lau and his father collaborated on a photographic venture that documented his father’s unsuccessful restoration. Lau returned to his hometown in Hawai‘i in search of closure. Entrusted with dispersing his father’s ashes throughout O‘ahu, Lau started working together with his grandparents to reconstruct his fragmented household historical past via pictures, uncovering hidden beforehand unknown components of his father’s life.
