A descent into the magical world of childhood by Amsterdam-based photographer and psychologist Marike Hoex. Hoex is drawn to that which is left unsaid—secrets and techniques, taboos—and approaches her work with out staging or preconceived concepts. Kids are recurring themes as Hoex is within the stress between understanding and never understanding—between what’s seen and what stays hidden—a world of each actuality and enchantment.
“Contained in the whale” touches on Hoex’s personal childhood. As a baby, she had common nightmares about being within a whale. Concurrently oppressive and enveloping, that inside world can be certainly one of creativeness with the whale taking up legendary standing and depths that can not be fathomed. As adults, Hoex’s photos power us to confront the failures of our creativeness, charged as they’re with the magic of childhood.
