One of many issues I’ve realized over time, each as a producer and as a lifelong fan of nice data, is that the moments we regularly consider as errors are sometimes the very moments that make us really feel one thing. They’re the little cracks in a vocal, the breath earlier than the road, the break up second the place the singer virtually loses management and in some way finds it once more.

These are the fingerprints of authenticity. I’ve spent years chasing these moments, not fixing them. They’re what separate a terrific vocal from a technically excellent one. An ideal vocal would possibly impress you. An imperfect one makes you consider it.

I not too long ago had a dialog with the fantastic Brandi Carlile, who advised me a narrative that superbly sums up this philosophy. We have been speaking about her music The Story, and he or she recalled that well-known vocal crack that everybody now is aware of and loves. She stated: “I’ve by no means been in a position to make it occur since. It may need simply been some bizarre anatomical factor, however there was positively an emotional factor taking place too. The primary time I did it, I virtually burst out laughing as a result of I believed it was such an unpleasant mistake.” She laughed as she advised me how T Bone Burnett, who was producing the document, got here operating into the sales space, flung the door open, and stated, “‘Try this once more. If you are able to do that once more, do it once more.’”

That story completely captures what makes music actual. Brandi thought it was a flaw. T Bone knew it was reality. As producers, our job isn’t to iron out the emotion. It’s to seize it. That “crack” wasn’t one thing to be tuned out or redone, it was the sound of vulnerability, of humanity breaking via the microphone. It was the second the place the music stopped being simply notes and phrases and have become Brandi Carlile telling her story. I all the time encourage singers to not chase perfection. I’ll take a barely sharp observe that provides me goosebumps over a flawless, lifeless take any day. These imperfections, the waver in pitch, the quiver in tone, the slight rasp on a phrase, are what join us to the listener. They remind us that music isn’t purported to sound like a machine. It’s purported to sound like you.

So once I’m comping vocals or producing a session, I’m actively on the lookout for these cracks, these human moments that inform the listener, that is actual. As a result of that’s what nice music is about, not perfection, however connection. And generally, connection lives proper there within the imperfection.
